Family Suspects Abduction

Seattle Times Staff: Seattle Times News Services

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The parents of an 8-year-old boy who disappeared while on a Christmas-tree hunt have added a $20,000 reward to the search effort, focusing on the theory that their son was kidnapped.

Derrick Engebretson disappeared Dec. 5 in the Pelican Butte area near Rocky Point, sparking a two-week search involving hundreds of volunteers.

They found few signs of the boy, and hope faded as temperatures dropped below freezing and snow covered any tracks he may have left. The search was abandoned Dec. 20, although the family is continuing its own efforts.

Lori and Robert Engebretson are now pursuing the possibility that their son was abducted.
